Singletons Unite!

Or at least don't abandon one another to the land of Smug Marrieds. Saturday I attended a birthday party thrown by a friend for her husband. As everyone arrived, I came to the startling conclusion that I was the only single person there. Let me repeat, the only single person at the party. Combine that with the fact we were bowling (not a favorite activity of mine because it involves wearing someone else's shoes) with the fact that in addition to being the only single person, I knew only four people there (2 couples, naturally) including the hosts. Throw in several children, all under the age of 5, greasy pizza, and Hawaiian Punch and you pretty much have the longest 2 hours of my life. All the while being reminded that I somehow don't fit. At least not with some of my oldest friends.

Oh, I'm not afraid to do things alone. In fact, I prefer being alone, it was just kind of excruciating to deal with it all, especially because there were lots of other bowlers outside our group who were on dates etc. I spend so much time alone, it just kind of startled me that I was so out of the norm. Although this was in Orem, so take of that what you will. And the couples I did know, I chatted with and bowled with, but I was still very much aware that I was The Other.

That is how I feel when I with the 'super' moms that some how manage to be immaculately dressed in their size 4's with their pretty little kids all dressed up in Gap talking about this or that latest trend in what ever, running their pampered chef and stamp nights. There I am the homeschooler mom in my plain clothes, definitely not size 4 pants, wondering what in the world am I doing here?

I prefer my own space too, Scully. Which is probably why those situations just seem to stand out in life's experiences. Being The Other is always an eye opener.

Walking, if it makes you feel any better, those moms are probably hopped up on Ritalin, anti-depressants, diet pills and their children probably feel like they care more about the GAP outfits than about them. I have a mom who shopped for herself at Goodwill and enjoyed playing in the dirt with earthworms with her children than hanging out with other moms and I am really, really happy she did.

Hey, CherBear, we simultaneously posted the same thought! Awesome. And I can vouch for Walking. One of the coolest people you'll ever meet and her kids are wicked lucky!

I would have been there, but had a blind date! I would do just about anything though for pizza, jk. We need to get together as single people soon!

Just the fact that it is bowling makes it the worst thing ever! I HATE bowling. That and going to the zoo...

Oh, and Walking- I'm with Scully, earthworm moms are so much cooler! And as a person who's been spending a lot of time in Junior Highs and High Schools lately, I can personally vouch that the kids with GAP mom's are definitely not as happy...it's sad.

Don't get me wrong, I love being the mom I am, I relate well to what Scully was saying about feeling out of place though. To tell the truth, I get bored easily in the GAP mom get together. I want my kids to say at the end of life that they learned so much, not that they had the cutest clothes, etc.
